The Morning After: Avoiding a Complete Breakout after Waking up in Last Night’s Makeup

We’ve all been there. You went out with the girls, drank a little too much wine, ate way too much pizza (weekend calories don’t count…right?) and the next thing you know, you’re waking up in the morning with a full face of smudged makeup and a massive headache.

You can feel the pimples brewing underneath your skin, ready to claim territory on your face in the form of last night’s bad decisions. Don’t panic; if you follow these 3 simple steps, you’ll have your skincare regime back on track in no time.

1. Hydrate.
This step is number one for a couple reasons. The first being, it is almost impossible to concentrate on your skincare regime when your mouth is so dry you feel like your swallowing sand. The second reason? Water flushes out toxins that produce acne. Begin by drinking 1L of cold water and then, before applying any face wash or makeup remover, have a 10-minute cold shower.

Dermatologists have found cold water improves skin tone and reduces acne. Unlike hot showers that open your pores and increase sebum production (the oil that blocks your pores), cold showers distress and tighten your pores.

2. Cleanse.
Once you’ve washed away last night’s toxins, it’s time to cleanse deep into the skin to avoid any new outbreaks. Green tea is a great natural antioxidant that nourishes the skin and rejuvenates the cells’ youthful qualities. Our favourite product right now is our Green Tea Fortified Cleanser. Replenishing your skin with vitamins A, C and E, CO-Q10 and soy phospholipid will destress you and create a smooth finish for your daytime look.

3. Turmeric Time.
This South Asian spice is taking the health food industry by storm this year. As part of the ginger family, turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Consuming turmeric helps reduce insulin production which is a key cause of acne among adults. You can find turmeric juices at your local grocery store or coffee shops such as Aroma. Oh, did we mention turmeric is also an amazing remedy for that dreadful morning-after headache you might be experiencing?
